How to reduce abdominal fluid retention?
Hi,
my mother in law’s is 62 years old liver has harden. She goes more frequently to the hospital now. The doctor says her water pills do not help much anymore.
She is taking Lasix as a water pill.
Anything else that we could try to reduce the excess fluid?
Is it normal that she has to go weekly to the hospital to get rid of the water retention?
Thanks.

what it sounds like she has is ascites (third spacing) you can see if she is able to do a paracentesis to remove the fluid from the peritoneal cavity. Even with paracentesis fluid will still accumulate there, yes going to the hospital weekly to remove the excess fluid (edema) since your liver has to constantly filter blood it will constantly get pushed out into the peritoneal cavity. Without knowing her exact diagnosis you can look into a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) it my help relieve some of the high blood pressure that she has directly in her liver only by having some of that blood to bypass the liver all together. ask your doctor to see if this is an option for her. look some of these things up to get more info to see if it relates to her situation. best of luck to your family.

Lasix is a form of diuretics that helps remove water from the body. In addition to that, try to limit your grandma’s water intake so that it will not add to the existing water in the body.
Try to give her tea as a substitute for plain water because tea is a diuretic too.
It is normal for her to go to the hospital frequently so that doctor can assess her condition because too much water in the body is also serious and can lead to generalized edema, high BP, and can progress later on to right sided heart failure and pulmonary problems.
