What kind of ailments do they prescribe Lasix for?

Chosen Answer:

Lasix is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid (water) from the body. These conditions include congestive heart failure (fluid backing up into the lungs from ineffective heart pumping), cirrhosis of the liver, and sometimes, kidney disease. When used to treat moderate high blood pressure, Lasix is often effective alone. With more severe high blood pressure it is used in combination with other high blood pressure medications.

Diuretics in general help your body produce and eliminate more urine, which helps lower blood pressure by removing fluid. Lasix is classified as a “loop diuretic” because it works in the Loop of Henle in the kidneys. One bad side effect, as someone else said, is that Lasix causes you to lose potassium in the process. This has to be monitored and can often times be treated with diet, however many people require potassium supplements.

As a side note, a non-human use for Lasix is the prevention, or at least reduction, of the incidence of bleeding through the nose by horses during races. Some states allow its use for all racehorses; some allow it only for confirmed “bleeders.”
