I take both. They both are diuretics but they work in different areas in the kidneys, so they aren't exactly the same. The HCTC (hydrochlorot) is kinder to your kidney function.

They are both diuretics , ie they remove excess fluid from your system. But they are not the same drug, they work in different ways.

You should speak to your physician or pharmacist. While both medications are diuretics, the right dosage amounts differ for both drugs depending on what your doctor is trying to do. Eg. 25mg of Lasix is not equivalent to 25mg of HCTZ.

I am posting a link to the drug also known as furosemide. After 20 years in nursing the complications are not that prevalent.
Any further questions should be directed to your doctor for your own personal health and safety.

The answer depends on why your dog is accumulating fluid. Heart failure is the most common cause of fluid accumulation in either the lungs or abdomen and the location is dependent on which part of the heart is failing. Cough can be an early sign of heart disease.
Heart failure is measured in stages and the early stages can be managed successfully with drugs and diet.
Read the excellent article below on heart disease and then ask your Vet which stage he thinks your dog is in and the chances that it can be managed successfully with medication and diet.

Although it never got that bad for our dog, we had a dog with heart failure who lived for years by taking Lasix. My grandmother took Lasix for years, and lived to be 87.
